Fleet Edit: One Session, Three Files
MediumText Editors15-25 minThe eu-west-1 migration is a go. Three environment files — /root/envs/dev.env, /root/envs/stage.env, and /root/envs/prod.env — all pin 'region=us-east-1' and all three must say 'region=eu-west-1' before the pipeline runs. Open all three in ONE vim session (vim /root/envs/*.env) and work through them with the argument-list commands: :wn writes the current file and moves to the next, :prev goes back, :wqa writes everything and quits. Reach for :wn rather than a bare :n — vim will not leave a buffer you have edited but not written, and answers :n with 'E37: No write since last change'. Three separate vim invocations would work too, but fleet edits are where buffers start paying rent.
- Open all three .env files in a single vim session
- Change region=us-east-1 to region=eu-west-1 in each
- Write all buffers and quit
