Escape Artist: Your First vim Edit
EasyText Editors10-15 minThe brief
The ops team drafted a message-of-the-day for this server, but nobody dared open vim to fix the typo in it. The draft lives at /root/motd-draft.txt and greets users with 'Welcom to Signal9' — one letter short of professional. Open the file in vim, fix the spelling to 'Welcome to Signal9', save, and quit. That's the whole mission: get in, make one edit, get out alive. (Yes, the 'how do I exit vim' rite of passage — defanged.)
What you'll do
- Open /root/motd-draft.txt in vim
- Fix the typo: 'Welcom to Signal9' → 'Welcome to Signal9'
- Save the file and quit vim
Hands-on lab: you work on a real Linux box in your browser, graded on the machine's actual state.
