tmux: Build a Multi-Window Workspace

MediumCommand Line Essentials10-15 min
The brief

One tmux session can hold several windows — think of them as tabs, each its own shell — so you can edit in one and run in another, all persisting together on the tmux server. Build a detached session named dev with two named windows: edit and run.

Grading checks the tmux server, not your keystrokes. The intended commands:

tmux new-session -d -s dev -n edit # session 'dev', first window named 'edit'

tmux new-window -t dev -n run # add a second window named 'run'

Verify with tmux list-windows -t dev (shows both windows) and tmux attach -t dev (Ctrl-b then n/p to switch windows, Ctrl-b d to detach).

What you'll do
  • Create a detached tmux session named dev (first window named edit)
  • Add a second window named run to that session
  • Leave it running detached

Hands-on lab: you work on a real Linux box in your browser, graded on the machine's actual state.
