Performance Triage: Read a Process Snapshot

EasyLinux+ Exam Prep10-20 min
The brief

A box is under load and first responders handed you a captured process snapshot. Triage it. The snapshot is /root/case/ps.txt (a ps aux-style table); your assignment vars are in /root/case/assignment.env.

Report three facts as plain text:

  • /root/case/top_mem_pid.txt — PID of the process using the most memory (highest RSS)
  • /root/case/top_cpu_pid.txt — PID of the process using the most CPU (highest %CPU)
  • /root/case/count.txt — number of processes owned by TARGET_USER

The snapshot varies per session. See /root/case/brief.txt.

What you'll do
  • Parse columnar ps output, skipping the header
  • Find the max by a numeric column (RSS, then %CPU)
  • Map the winning row back to its PID
  • Count processes owned by a specific user

Hands-on lab: you work on a real Linux box in your browser, graded on the machine's actual state.
