Samba: Publish an SMB File Share
MediumNetworking15-25 minThe brief
Samba is installed with only a [global] section. Publish an SMB share. Your assignment is in /root/case/assignment.env (SHARE, SHARE_PATH, WRITABLE).
Two tasks:
1. Create the directory SHARE_PATH.
2. Add a share section to /etc/samba/smb.conf:
`
[SHARE]
path = SHARE_PATH
read only = <no if WRITABLE=yes, yes if WRITABLE=no>
browseable = yes
`
writable = yes is the inverse of read only = no — either form is accepted for the access setting. Grading reads smb.conf and checks the directory (it does not start smbd). On a live host: testparm to validate, then systemctl reload smbd. See /root/case/brief.txt.
What you'll do
- Read the per-session share assignment
- Create the share directory
- Define a [SHARE] section pointing at the path
- Set the access mode to match WRITABLE
Hands-on lab: you work on a real Linux box in your browser, graded on the machine's actual state.
