Postfix: Host a Virtual Alias Domain

MediumNetworking15-25 min
The brief

The server must accept mail for an extra domain it is NOT the final destination for, and forward one address there to a local mailbox — Postfix virtual alias domains. Your assignment is in /root/case/assignment.env (VIRTUAL_DOMAIN, VIRTUAL_ALIAS, LOCAL_DEST).

Three edits (don't add the domain to mydestination — virtual domains are separate):

1. virtual_alias_domains = VIRTUAL_DOMAIN in /etc/postfix/main.cf.

2. virtual_alias_maps = hash:/etc/postfix/virtual in main.cf.

3. VIRTUAL_ALIAS@VIRTUAL_DOMAIN LOCAL_DEST in /etc/postfix/virtual, then postmap.

Grading reads main.cf and /etc/postfix/virtual (Postfix need not be running). See /root/case/brief.txt.

What you'll do
  • Declare a virtual alias domain in Postfix
  • Point Postfix at a virtual alias lookup table
  • Map a virtual address to a local mailbox
  • Keep virtual domains distinct from mydestination

Hands-on lab: you work on a real Linux box in your browser, graded on the machine's actual state.
