ISC DHCP: Pin a Device with a Static Reservation
MediumNetworking15-25 minThe brief
A device must always get the same IP. The DHCP server already serves the LAN; add a static host reservation. Your assignment is in /root/case/assignment.env (HOSTNAME, MAC, FIXED_IP).
Add a host block to /etc/dhcp/dhcpd.conf:
`
host HOSTNAME {
hardware ethernet MAC;
fixed-address FIXED_IP;
}
`
Match the device by its MAC and pin it to FIXED_IP (keep it out of the dynamic pool). Grading reads dhcpd.conf (dhcpd need not be running). See /root/case/brief.txt.
What you'll do
- Add a named host reservation block
- Match the device by its hardware (MAC) address
- Assign it a stable fixed-address
- Understand static reservations vs the dynamic pool
Hands-on lab: you work on a real Linux box in your browser, graded on the machine's actual state.
