Routing: Forward Traffic and Add a Static Route

MediumNetworking15-25 min
The brief

Make this host route to a downstream network through a next-hop gateway. Your assignment is in /root/case/assignment.env (INTERFACE, DEST_SUBNET, GATEWAY).

1. Enable IPv4 forwarding persistently — net.ipv4.ip_forward = 1 in /etc/sysctl.d/.

2. Add a static route to DEST_SUBNET via GATEWAY under the interface in /etc/netplan/01-netcfg.yaml.

Grading reads the sysctl drop-in and the netplan YAML. See /root/case/brief.txt.

What you'll do
  • Enable IPv4 forwarding persistently
  • Add a static route to the far subnet
  • Send that route via the assigned gateway
  • Understand forwarding + routing between networks

Hands-on lab: you work on a real Linux box in your browser, graded on the machine's actual state.
