Network Analysis: The Failing DNS Server

MediumNetworking10-15 min
The brief

Applications can't resolve names. The resolver configuration is the real /etc/resolv.conf on this box — its servers differ per session. Identify the DNS server the resolver will try first and record its IP.

Only active nameserver lines count: a line whose first character is # is a comment, however much it looks like configuration. (The rotate option spreads queries on some libcs, but the first listed server is still the one to check first.)

Record the IP to /root/answers/dns_server.txt.

What you'll do
  • Record the configured DNS server IP to /root/answers/dns_server.txt

Hands-on lab: you work on a real Linux box in your browser, graded on the machine's actual state.
