Permissions: Hand Over Ownership

MediumLinux Fundamentals15-20 min
The brief

A new service account 'appsvc' and its team group 'analysts' were just created on this box, and the app's files still belong to root. Hand them over:

1. /srv/app/app.log → owned by appsvc, group analysts (one chown can set both).

2. /srv/app/shared/ → keep root as owner but give the analysts GROUP the directory (chgrp — or chown :analysts).

3. /srv/app/handbook.txt → owned by appsvc (group stays root).

Only root may give files away — which is exactly who you are. Verify with ls -l or stat -c '%U:%G'.

What you'll do
  • app.log is owned appsvc:analysts
  • shared/ keeps owner root but gets group analysts
  • handbook.txt is owned by appsvc

Hands-on lab: you work on a real Linux box in your browser, graded on the machine's actual state.
