Discover the Flag (man Is Your Only Way In)
EasyLinux Fundamentals10-15 minThree tasks on the files in /root/depot — and each needs a flag this course has never shown you. That's the point: open the man page, search it, find the flag, verify your result. Write each answer under /root/answers/ (already created):
1. oldest.txt — the names in /root/depot listed OLDEST-modified first (one per line). man ls, search /sort and /reverse.
2. sizes.txt — the names listed LARGEST file first. Same man page, different flag.
3. Make a backup: copy /root/depot/config to /root/backup/config.bak so the copy keeps the ORIGINAL's modification time. man cp, search /preserve. (Keeping the backup OUTSIDE the depot means your listings stay true.)
The grader only checks results — each list is checked against the files' real modification times and sizes, so any command that produces the right names in the right order counts. The manual is how you get there.
- List /root/depot oldest-first into oldest.txt (a flag you find in man ls)
- List /root/depot largest-first into sizes.txt
- Copy config to /root/backup/config.bak preserving its modification time (man cp)
Hands-on lab: you work on a real Linux box in your browser, graded on the machine's actual state.
