Careful Deletion: Clean the Desk
MediumLinux Fundamentals15-20 minThe brief
Your desk at /root/desk needs clearing, and this is a precision job — the grader checks what REMAINS as strictly as what's gone. Delete: the three scratch files ending in .tmp, and the empty directory empty-box (rmdir handles that one — it only deletes empty directories, which is exactly the safety you want). Survive, untouched: notes.tmp.txt (looks tmp-ish, ends in .txt), tmp-checklist.txt (starts with tmp, isn't one), and the box/ directory with the keepsake inside it. rm has no undo, the look-alikes are planted to punish sloppy patterns, and ls is your preview tool. Slow is smooth, smooth is fast.
What you'll do
- Delete the three *.tmp scratch files — and ONLY them
- Remove the empty directory empty-box with rmdir
- Leave notes.tmp.txt, tmp-checklist.txt, and box/ exactly as found
Hands-on lab: you work on a real Linux box in your browser, graded on the machine's actual state.
